Dragon Ball Z: Is the Super Saiyan really that special?

The Super Saiyan is a transformation that gives a massive power boost to the user, and this ability is specific to Saiyans. When we first saw Goku gon Super Saiyan in his fight with Freiza on Planet Namek, it was quite a game-changer for the entire series. But is this transformation really that special?

According to a popular theory, the Super Saiyan transformation is pretty much normal to the Saiyans. This theory suggests that Goku was the first Super Saiyan only because the Saiyans before him never had to push themselves so much, and never developed feelings of love which would trigger them like Krillin's death triggered Goku.

This theory, however, was debunked when Toriyama introduced the S-Cells, which was honestly the dumbest thing he could come up with.
